📖 The Mystery That Didn’t Add Up

A short story to learn phrasal verbs

Old bookstore mystery

Lena had always wanted to find out the truth about the old bookstore on her street. People said the owner had suddenly disappeared, and no one had managed to figure out why.

One evening, as she was about to head out, she noticed the lights inside the shop were on. “That doesn’t make sense,” she thought. She decided to check it out.

She slowly walked in and began to look around. Books were piled up everywhere, and it seemed like no one had cleaned up for years. As she picked up an old journal, a piece of paper fell out.

Lena looked over the note carefully. It mentioned someone trying to cover up a secret. Before she could think it through, she heard a noise.

She quickly turned around, but no one was there. Her heart began to beat up faster (okay, she tried to calm down, but it didn’t really work out). Still, she didn’t want to back out now.

She decided to go on and follow up the clue. The note led her to a hidden door behind a shelf. She had to move aside several heavy books to open it.

Inside, she came across a small office. Papers were spread out, as if someone had left in a hurry. Lena started to put together the story: the owner had tried to bring up a problem, but someone had wanted to shut him down.

Suddenly, a man stepped in. “What are you doing here?” he asked.

Lena tried not to give in to fear. “I’m just trying to find out what happened,” she said.

The man sighed and finally began to open up. He explained everything—the lies, the secret, and why the owner had to run away.

In the end, Lena promised not to give away the secret right away, but she told him he should sort things out himself.

As she walked away, she realized that sometimes the truth doesn’t just show up—you have to dig it up yourself.
