Step 6: Grammar discovery – Present perfect
🔍 Look at these sentences from the video:
- "How long have you been at Apex TV?"
- "You’ve worked with me on the food program, you’ve done some interviews, and you’ve done quite a lot of research."
❓ Discovery questions (discuss with a partner):
- What tense is used to ask about duration from past to present? (present perfect: have/has + past participle)
- What tense is used for the specific past action ("started")? (past simple)
- When do we use present perfect? (to talk about experience, or actions that started in the past and continue)
We use it to talk about:
- Experience (without a specific time): "She has worked on many projects."
- Duration from past to now (with 'for' or 'since'): "She has been at Apex TV for about a year."
Structure:
have/has + past participleExample from the video: "You’ve done some interviews."
Step 7: Pronunciation focus – Short /ɪ/ sound
🎯 Target sound: /ɪ/ – short, relaxed vowel like in "it", "big", "sit".
Listen and repeat. Click 🔊 to hear each word.
💡 Tip: The short /ɪ/ sound is very common. Practice with a relaxed, short vowel – don’t stretch it like "ee".
Step 8: Controlled practice – Complete the sentences
Step 9: Freer practice – Speak & record
🎙️ Speaking prompt: Use the present perfect to talk about your own work or study experience (e.g., how long you have studied English, what you have done). Record a sentence that correctly uses the structure.
💡 Examples:
• "I have studied English for three years."
• "Julia has worked on the food program."
