🔒 If I Had Known That...
(Third Conditional: Unreal Past Situations)
Step 1: Look and predict!
Look at the image and the sentence: "If I had known that, I wouldn't have stolen the money."
What do you think happened? Who is speaking? What secret did they discover too late?
✔️ Later, they discovered something important (the money belonged to a charity, or the person was their relative)
✔️ They feel deep regret and wish they could go back in time ⏰
✔️ This is a Third Conditional sentence – talking about an imaginary past situation.
Step 2: Read the story
Leo was a young accountant at a small company. One day, he made a terrible decision. He stole $10,000 from the company's bank account. He thought no one would notice. He used the money to pay his mother's medical bills.
What was the truth? Leo didn't know that his boss, Mr. Thompson, had a secret fund for employee emergencies. Mr. Thompson always helped employees in need. But Leo never asked for help. He decided to steal instead.
Three months later, the company discovered the missing money. The police arrested Leo. If he had asked for help, he wouldn't have gone to prison. While sitting in the courtroom, Leo learned the terrible truth. Mr. Thompson's emergency fund had more than enough money. The company would have paid all of Leo's mother's medical bills if he had simply asked.
Leo's mother found out about the theft. She was heartbroken. "If I had known you were struggling, I would have sold my house," she said. "But you didn't tell me the truth."
Now, Leo sits in his prison cell every night. He thinks about his mistake. "If I had known about the emergency fund, I wouldn't have stolen the money. If I had talked to my boss, my life would be different today. If I had trusted people, my mother wouldn't be so sad."
Leo's story teaches an important lesson: Always ask for help before you do something you will regret.
