Step 2: Read the story

Emma has a little kitten. His name is Mochi. Mochi is very playful. One morning, Emma cannot find Mochi. “Mochi! Where are you?” she calls.

Emma looks in the kitchen. She looks under the table. No kitten! She looks on the chair. No kitten!

She goes to the living room. The TV is on the wall. A lamp is next to the sofa. Emma looks behind the sofa. Nothing!

Emma looks in the bathroom. The towels are on the shelf. The soap is next to the sink. She looks under the bed. No Mochi!

She looks in the bedroom. The shoes are on the floor. A box is under the window. She looks behind the curtain. No kitten!

Emma is sad. She sits on the sofa. Suddenly, she hears a small “meow.” The sound comes from inside the sofa cushion! Emma looks between the cushions. There is Mochi! He is sleeping in a hole inside the sofa!

“Mochi! You are inside the sofa!” Emma laughs. She takes Mochi out. He is safe and warm. Now Emma puts a soft blanket on the sofa so Mochi sleeps on top of the blanket, not inside the sofa!

🔎 Sentence 2: "Mochi is sleeping in a hole."

Question: When do we use the word "in"? What kind of places?

✅ IN – We use IN for enclosed spaces or rooms.
📌 Examples: in the kitchen, in a box, in the bedroom, in the bathroom, in a hole.
📌 Think: inside something with walls or boundaries.

🔎 Sentence 3: "She looks on the chair."

🔎 Sentence 4: "The TV is on the wall."

Question: When do we use the word "on"? What kind of surface?

✅ ON – We use ON for surfaces (touching the top or attached to a surface).
📌 Examples: on the chair, on the wall, on the sofa, on the floor, on the shelf, on the blanket.

🔎 Sentence 5: "She looks under the table."

🔎 Sentence 6: "She looks under the bed."

Question: What does "under" mean?

✅ UNDER – We use UNDER for something below or beneath another thing.
📌 Examples: under the table, under the bed, under the window.

🔎 Sentence 7: "A lamp is next to the sofa."

🔎 Sentence 8: "The soap is next to the sink."

Question: What does "next to" mean?

✅ NEXT TO – We use NEXT TO for something beside or very close to another thing.
📌 Examples: next to the sofa, next to the sink (same as "beside").

🔎 Sentence 9: "Emma looks behind the sofa."

🔎 Sentence 10: "She looks behind the curtain."

Question: What does "behind" mean?

✅ BEHIND – We use BEHIND for something at the back of another thing.
📌 Examples: behind the sofa, behind the curtain.

🔎 (Not in the story) Example: "The cat sits in front of the fireplace."

Question: What does "in front of" mean?

✅ IN FRONT OF – We use IN FRONT OF for something facing or before another thing.
📌 Examples: in front of the TV, in front of the house, in front of the door.
📌 Opposite of "behind".

Question: What does "between" mean?

✅ BETWEEN – We use BETWEEN for something in the middle of two things.
📌 Examples: between the cushions, between two chairs, between the books.
