Step 2: Read the story
Mark works at a serious bank. Every day, he wears a suit and talks about money. His coworkers think Mark likes only numbers and spreadsheets. But Mark has a secret. He loves knitting! 🧶
Every evening, Mark goes home, changes into comfortable clothes, and knits colorful scarves. He doesn't tell anyone at work. “They will laugh at me,” he thinks.
Mark feels curious. On Thursday, he arrives at the community center. He opens the door. There are ten people inside! They do surprising things.
Sarah, a lawyer, paints miniature teacups. David, a police officer, writes poetry about cats. Linda, a dentist, collects rubber ducks. And Mr. Thompson, a 70-year-old retired teacher, plays competitive video games! 🎮
Mark shows his knitted scarf. Everyone loves it! “I don't understand why people hide their hobbies,” says Sarah. “We enjoy different things, and that makes life interesting!”
Now, Mark doesn't hide his knitting anymore. He brings his knitting to work during lunch break. His coworkers think it's cool. One of them asks Mark to teach her! Mark smiles. “Everyone has a secret hobby,” he says. “What do you do for fun?”
Step 3: Discover the grammar rules
📌 Look at these sentences from the story. Answer the questions to discover the rules.
🔎 Sentence A: "Mark knits colorful scarves."
🔎 Sentence B: "They do surprising things."
Question 1: What is different about the verbs in Sentence A (Mark) and Sentence B (They)?
• For He / She / It (third person singular), we add -s to the verb. (knits, likes, goes, paints, writes, collects, plays, loves, enjoys, makes, has)
• For I / You / We / They, we use the base form (no -s). (do, wear, talk, think, feel, arrive, show)
🔎 Sentence C: "He doesn't tell anyone at work."
🔎 Sentence D: "I don't understand why people hide their hobbies."
Question 2: How do we make negative sentences? What is the difference between Sentence C and Sentence D?
• For He / She / It, use doesn't + base verb (without -s). (doesn't tell, doesn't hide)
• For I / You / We / They, use don't + base verb. (don't understand, don't hide)
🔎 Sentence E: "What do you do for fun?"
Question 3: How do we form questions in Present Simple? Look at the word order.
• For I / You / We / They, use Do + subject + base verb.
• For He / She / It, use Does + subject + base verb (the -s goes on "does", not on the main verb).
• Example: "Does Sarah paint teacups?" → Yes, she does.
🔎 Look at these verbs from the story: likes, goes, paints, watches (not in story but common), plays
Question 4: Can you see the spelling rules for adding -s?
• Most verbs: add -s (like → likes, play → plays)
• Verbs ending in -ch, -sh, -ss, -x, -o: add -es (watch → watches, go → goes, do → does)
• Verbs ending in consonant + y: change y to i and add -es (carry → carries) – but "plays" is vowel + y, so just -s
